The Director

Page Whalen, M.Ed., MPA

I build bridges—between institutional policy and localized practice, between vision and scalable compliance execution.

My career resides at the intersection of public sector compliance, AI infrastructure development, and educational design. From serving inside the Texas General Land Office to co-founding GetClickable to help businesses close the WCAG accessibility gap, I operate under one primary rule: strong execution relies on systemic frameworks.

With double Master's degrees from Texas A&M's Bush School of Government in Public Administration and Education, I understand the underlying rules of complex platforms. This exact structural clarity is what I bring to both city agencies and AP Literature students in grade 8–12 ELA pathways.

You Don’t Have to Fix Everything: Why Small Steps Matter for Your Mental Health

Feel like you need to fix everything at once? Learn how mindfulness, smaller goals, and redefining success can make mental health growth feel more manageable.

There is a particular kind of pressure that can disguise itself as self-improvement:

"I need to fix this. And I need to fix it now."

You decide you're going to completely change your routine. Work out harder. Become more productive. Get healthier. Be a better parent, partner, friend, employee or version of yourself.

And somehow, despite doing more and trying harder, you still feel like you're falling behind.

That idea sits at the center of a conversation in our latest episode: What if getting better doesn't require fixing everything?

The Urge to Fix Everything at Once

When we're hurting, overwhelmed or dissatisfied with where we are, dramatic change can be incredibly appealing.

One story shared during the episode captures that feeling perfectly.

After going through a painful period in her life, one of our guests describes repeatedly looking for something big enough to make herself feel better. Exercise became extreme. Accomplishments became another target. If running helped, maybe running farther would help more. If achieving something felt good, maybe achieving something bigger would finally make everything okay.

"If I work hard enough, hurt enough or accomplish enough, maybe I can get through the pain faster."

But mental health doesn't always work that way.

Growth isn't necessarily proportional to how much we exhaust ourselves trying to achieve it.

Sometimes the constant need to improve ourselves can become another source of pressure.

When Self-Improvement Becomes All-or-Nothing Thinking

There is nothing wrong with wanting to grow. The problem begins when growth becomes conditional:

  • "I have to completely change."
  • "I need to get this right."
  • "I shouldn't still be struggling with this."
  • "If I'm going to exercise, I need to push myself as hard as possible."
  • "If I'm going to succeed, I need to succeed at everything."

That kind of all-or-nothing thinking can make ordinary progress feel like failure. Instead of noticing the things that are improving, our attention goes immediately toward everything that still isn't perfect.

And eventually, we can find ourselves trying to perform wellness instead of actually experiencing it.

You don't have to become an entirely different person before you're allowed to feel proud of yourself.

Mental Health Progress Can Be Surprisingly Small

One of the most important realizations in the conversation is also one of the simplest: Feeling better doesn't always require a giant step.

Sometimes it is a tiny adjustment to something you already do every day.

For example, waking up early had become something one guest dreaded. Instead of trying to somehow force herself to love mornings, she asked a different question: What could I put into my morning that I already love?

Coffee
Warm Shower
Quiet Moments

The alarm itself didn't magically become enjoyable. The life surrounding the alarm changed. That's an important distinction. Instead of demanding that she change how she felt, she created something worth getting up for.

Mindfulness Brings You Back to What's Happening Now

The episode also explores mindfulness through an intentionally simple exercise involving a raisin.

Rather than eating it automatically, you slow everything down. Notice its texture. Feel its weight. Look at its surface. Notice its smell. Taste it. Pay attention to the experience instead of immediately moving on to whatever comes next.

The Grounding Anchor

The raisin itself isn't the important part—the practice is. Mental health struggles pull our attention in every direction except the present. Mindfulness asks something much smaller of us: What is happening right now?

You Are Allowed to Redefine Success

Success doesn't have one definition. For some of us, success becomes attached almost entirely to achievement: the degree, the promotion, the finish line, the perfect family, or the ability to be everything everyone needs from us at all times.

What Smaller Success Looks Like:

  • Recognizing you handled a difficult conversation differently than a year ago.
  • Apologizing first.
  • Leaving work when you said you would instead of staying another two hours.
  • Getting out of bed and facing a difficult day.
  • Simply deciding: I'll try again tomorrow.

Stop Measuring Your Mental Health by Finish Lines

One of the traps of perfectionism is treating mental health like a project with a completion date.

Mental health is often closer to a practice than a destination. You learn. You struggle. You recognize patterns. You try something different. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. Then you learn something from that too.

What Can You Do Today?

Instead of asking yourself, "How do I fix my life?" try making the question smaller. Ask:

"What would make today 5% easier?"

✓ Leave work on time
✓ Walk without tracking distance
✓ Drink coffee without checking emails
✓ Call someone you care about
✓ Take 10 quiet minutes
✓ Acknowledge you are tired

You don't have to fix everything today. You only have to decide what taking care of yourself looks like in this moment.

Sometimes courage is enormous. And sometimes it is quietly getting up tomorrow and trying again.
